Are you ready for Thanksgiving?

Only 9 days til Thanksgiving. Are you ready? Do you wait like I do to do your grocery shopping the week of or days before? I am watching the store adds to see who has the cheapest prices on sweet potatoes. They are the price of a gallon of gas per pound. Since my hubby does not eat birds, I cook ham too. I love watching the Food Network channel to learn new ways to prepare the turkey. Got any hints of what works best for you?

That picture is so sad.

I don't like turkey so my family always makes ham ever year also, just to appease me.

Are we talking turkey? As in moist and delicious, not hand-me-some-water-so-I-can-wash-down dry turkey? If so, then I have a trick. After about 10 years my sister-in-law finally asked me how I did it. (Every year I make the turkeys for our family's feast, and yes, they are super moist.) So I revealed my secrets. First -- the foil. I slow-roast my turkeys beneath foil. As I'm roasting, I baste every thirty minutes. Then, after the turkeys come out of the oven, I get my wonderful brothers to drain the drippings into a clear bowl so I can see the fat separating. I remove the fat, then I use my lucky baster to suck out some of drippings. (The rest I use for gravy.) After the turkey is sliced, I drizzle some of the drippings over the layers of slices. And voila - turkey drenched in delicious natural moistness is served!! And everyone gobble-gobbles it up!!

I am not sure if I am emotionally ready... with the passing of my beloved mother-in-law, these holidays are going to be difficult. She LOVED this time of year and the cooking and baking and visiting. But we will prevail in her honor. I know that you know what I mean...

I love the Thanksgiving feast. It used to be MY celebration... then all the kids started going to in-laws' homes so we could all have Christmas together! SOOOO... Audrey and family head to Pittsburgh. Keith and family head to western Massachusetts. Adam and family head to Philadelphia. And Jane and her husband alternate years with us and her Rhode Island in-laws. Jane loves helping Barry and me cook... and Barry learned and remembered EVERYTHING his Mom taught him (she had 3 boys, and she did it right by all of them... they ALL know how to cook! Pass this little tidbit onto Steph! My mother-in-law always told Audrey to make sure her boys can cook!!!!).

I have everything all set in my head... I just have to put it in motion. My Mom will be with us, too. Very simple... Barry, Jane, Steve, my Mom and me! And of course Jane and Steve's precious doggies!

Thanks for lighting a fire under my butt!

I am ready, but I hate turkey! I wish my mom cooked ham, but it's okay, because she cooks a lot of other yummy things. I'm definitely ready for the four day weekend, but I can't believe it's almost that time of year.

I always hear on the Food Network to let meat rest for 30 min after taking it out of the heat so the juices can redistribute. If you start cutting right away a lot of juice will drip out of the meat. I also squirt some juices over the slices and let it soak up more. But I leave the fat in those juices to keep the meat moist even after days of being left-over. I drain off the fat just to make gravy.

Like Steph, I also have to pick up my free turkey from the Wise Way points I've gotten.

Some friends invited (from Valpo) invited us to come over for Thanksgiving. We don't have family here, so holidays can sometimes be difficult. We'll have fun with our friends and their family I know. We play cards and the kids enjoy each others' company. The best thing for me is that I don't have to cook:-) They only ask me to bring caramel corn because it's the only thing I make well.

I love turkey...but we are having ham too. :(
But there will be other things that I like so it will be o.k.
I did buy a turkey breast to do at another time.
I have gotten some of my things already..my brother is doing part and I am doing part.
I think oiling the outside of the turkey makes it moist. Back home I always bought a garlic butter injector and sometimes I like to put a sprig of rosemary under the skin. That's it for now.

I was dropping by to say hi after you so kindly left word on my blog!

I am SO ready for Thanksgiving...Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday, and I am pregnant this year! Heck YEAH:)

As far as tricks goes, I rub our turkey in butter and a little parsley and baste every 30 minutes. It has turned out perfect every year! Nothing special, but the bird is always good:)
